Richard Porter gets ready to sleep rough in the Leeds Big Sleep and we need your help

Our Sales Director, Richard Porter, is getting ready to participate in the Leeds Big Sleep. Living in Leeds, he felt as though more needed to be done in his community to help those in unfortunate positions in life. Therefore, Richard has chosen to get involved in the Leeds Big Sleep.

What is the Leeds Big Sleep?

The Leeds Big Sleep is a fundraising event that takes place at Headingly Stadium. All those involved sacrifice one night of comfort to sleep out in the cold to gain empathy as well as raise funds for homeless people in Leeds. However, not only homeless people benefit from the funds raised, two other Leeds based charities receive support from the event too…

What does the money go towards?

The fundraising from the event supports St George’s Crypt, St Gemma’s Hospice, and the Leeds Rhino Foundation.

What do the charities do?

St George’s Crypt is the charity that arranges the Leeds Big Sleep each year. They are also the charity that has been caring and supporting homeless people in Leeds since 1930. They do this by providing homeless and underprivileged people with:

  • Food
  • Recovery from addiction
  • Emergency accommodation
  • Specialist residential projects
  • Skills training for services users
  • Volunteering/work experience

And so much more.

St Gemma’s Hospice provides expert care and accommodation to those with life-threatening and terminal illnesses. Their services are entirely free charge to anyone in the Leeds area who needs it. But being a charity that relies solely on the generosity of donors, supporting the charity is fundamental to the running of the hospice.

Thirdly, the Leeds Rhino Foundation is a community sports team of both children and adults. The foundation preserves the power of community and fitness through the channel of sport. Their aim is to make a positive and profound impact on individual’s lives through the power of sport.

Richard speaks on his intentions behind getting involved

“Living in the area, I can see that there sadly seems to be more people sleeping rough on the streets in Leeds.

I just felt I needed to do more to help. Just giving up one night to sleep on some cardboard in the hope of raising awareness, and sponsors for the charities is the least I can do. Every penny raised is shared equally between the three Leeds based Charities and therefore helps people that are in desperate need.”

How you can help

Richard will do sleeping rough; all we ask is that you contribute anything you can to help us reach our fundraising target of £500. Any donations will be enormously appreciated!
